Powerful storms in the Balkans: How the collision of opposing air masses generated extreme weather

The Balkan region was swept by powerful storms that brought destructive winds, large hail and heavy rainfall. Meteorology experts confirm that these events were not random, but the result of a specific interaction between two completely different air masses.

Meteorologists explain that the main cause was the meeting of a cold front with the extremely hot and moisture-laden air that had lingered over the region for several days in a row. This collision created an atmospheric environment with extraordinary energy, ideal for the development of organized storms and supercells.

According to reports from ESTOFEX experts, a deep atmospheric trough from northwestern Europe pushed a cold front first towards Italy and then towards the Balkan Peninsula. The contact of this cold mass with the superheated and exceptionally humid air over the Adriatic Sea and Southeastern Europe released massive amounts of energy, fueling the storms.

Another decisive factor was the change in wind speed and direction with height, a phenomenon called “wind shear”. This phenomenon enabled the formation of supercells, which represent the most powerful type of storm, capable of generating large hail, destructive winds and, under special circumstances, even tornadoes.

Furthermore, meteorologists warned that from Italy, across Croatia, Bosnia, Montenegro, Kosovo, Albania, Romania and Bulgaria, there was a risk of the formation of long-lived storm systems, known as “bow echoes”. It is precisely these systems that are responsible for the greatest wind damage.

Given the high risk potential, ESTOFEX decided to issue a level 3 warning, which represents the highest alert level and is used only for extremely dangerous situations.

Finally, specialists remind that periods of high temperatures do not cancel the possibility of severe weather. On the contrary, the more the atmosphere heats up and moistens, the more energy accumulates. When a cooler air mass arrives, all this energy is released violently, bringing extremely intense storms with torrential rain, hail, and winds that can reach hurricane force.
