The appointment of the 66-year-old to oversee the country’s finances is an unexpected move, as Healey was not considered the leading candidate for the post. However, the Labour Party veteran is familiar with the field, having served as a Treasury minister from 2002 to 2007.
Healey left Keir Starmer’s government last month, criticising it for insufficient investment in the armed forces. He said the country was not adequately prepared to confront security challenges in an increasingly dangerous world.
Securing funds to increase defence investment is expected to be among Healey’s main challenges in his new role, as the issue ranks among the new UK cabinet’s priorities.
In Andy Burnham’s government, Ed Miliband has been appointed Foreign Secretary. He led the Labour Party from 2010 to 2015 and served as Energy Secretary in Keir Starmer’s government. He will now be responsible for the country’s foreign policy.
Shabana Mahmood will remain Home Secretary. She is known for her tough stance on immigration issues.
The formation of the new cabinet follows the latest political developments in Britain, as Andy Burnham begins assembling the team that will lead the country in the coming period.
