Of Dutch origin, she has built a prominent professional profile in marketing and business strategy.

Known to friends as Frankie, Marie-France van Hill first met Andy Burnham in 1989 at Cambridge’s Fitzwilliam College, where she had just begun her studies. At the time, Burnham was a second-year English literature student.

According to fellow students from that period, their relationship quickly attracted attention, as van Hill was regarded as one of the most prominent figures on campus.

She was born in January 1970 and spent her childhood and youth between the Netherlands and Belgium before moving to the United Kingdom to pursue higher education.

During the early stages of their relationship, the couple experienced a rather unusual episode. Encouraged by van Hill, she appeared on ITV’s famous television show “Blind Date,” hosted by Cilla Black, where she chose a contestant for a trip to Gibraltar. However, the date did not lead to a lasting relationship.

Many years later, Burnham and his wife ran into the same man again in a bar inside Parliament, where he was then working as a communications director for the Conservative Party.

The couple became parents for the first time in 2000, when their son Jimmy was born. Burnham himself has said that it was their son’s birth that prompted them to formalise their relationship through marriage after living together for several years.

In a 2007 interview, he said he regarded marriage as the best way to raise children, describing himself as someone with traditional views on the issue.

The family later grew with the arrival of two daughters, Rosie and Annie. Their son Jimmy works at the Royal College of Nursing, Rosie has pursued a career in the drinks industry with the Jägermeister brand, while Annie graduated from Cardiff University.

Marie-France van Hill has established a successful career in marketing and strategy. She has contributed to reputable companies such as Sky, as well as corporate identity projects, including the creation of emblems for the BBC and the Rugby Football Union.

According to observers, her background in communications has also influenced the development of Andy Burnham’s political campaigns.

Van Hill currently holds a senior marketing role at Iduna, which operates a network of electric vehicle charging stations across the Manchester region.

Her role has prompted political debate because Burnham, during his tenure as Mayor of Greater Manchester, was involved in decisions affecting transport and energy infrastructure.

To eliminate any suspicion of a potential conflict of interest, Burnham publicly disclosed his wife’s professional role and recused himself from any decision-making process involving Iduna or related initiatives.

The Conservative Party targeted him for failing to report the 0.2% stake van Hill held in the company. However, the Greater Manchester Authority clarified that Burnham had complied with all legal requirements for declaring interests by publicly disclosing his wife’s professional position.
