Mehazi’s Analysis: Why Is Montenegro a State, While 600,000 Albanians Are Called a Minority in North Macedonia?

Opinionist and academic from Tetovo, Sulejman Mehazi, has published an article in Macedonian highlighting a deep contradiction in the political and constitutional treatment of the Albanian community in North Macedonia, placing it against the state reality of Montenegro.

Below we present in full Professor Mehazi’s stance:

According to him, it is an incomprehensible paradox that a country like Montenegro, with a population of 600,000, functions as an independent state, while the same number of Albanians in North Macedonia are treated merely as a national minority.

He adds that those who see North Macedonia as a purely national state are profoundly mistaken. According to Mehazi, today’s global dynamics and the great powers are engaged against the concept of nation-states, aiming for domination through multiethnic models. Both the United States of America and the European Union, he emphasizes, are pressuring the government of the Republic of North Macedonia so that state power prevails over national power, placing the state first and national identity second.

Furthermore, the professor stresses that if the cabinet led by Mickoski aspires to join the EU, then including the Bulgarian minority in the Constitution becomes an undisputable necessity. He argues that there is no logic in having the numerically smaller Serbian, Turkish, Romani, and Bosniak minorities part of the constitutional text, while the significantly larger Bulgarian community remains outside it.

In this grouping of minorities in the Republic of North Macedonia, Mehazi clarifies that Albanians do not belong, because they constitute a mass of 600,000 inhabitants — a figure equal to the entire population of Montenegro, which itself is expected to integrate into the European Union soon.

In conclusion, he characterizes as a complete absurdity the fact that a territory with 600,000 inhabitants like Montenegro is recognized as a sovereign state, while a community of the same number of people in North Macedonia is labeled a minority.
