Donald Trump has said that the economic damage he claims the United States suffers from wildfire smoke coming from Canada should be factored into customs tariffs on Canadian products.
In a post on Truth Social, the US president accused Canada of failing to properly manage its forests and vegetation, which he said is causing air pollution in US territory.

“We are holding Canada responsible for not properly maintaining its forests and brush. The United States is unnecessarily facing polluted, harmful and unhealthy air, the quality of which is dangerous and completely unacceptable,” Trump wrote.
He described the issue as “deliberate negligence,” stressing that the situation is repeated every year and is costing the United States billions of dollars.
“This is a case of deliberate negligence and is becoming an annual occurrence, costing the US billions of dollars. The cost of this pollution should be added to the tariffs Canada is currently paying,” Trump said.
