Meloni unveils new security measures: No compensation for those injured while committing crimes

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni explained one of the central elements of the new security bill, approved on Wednesday by Italy’s Council of Ministers, in a post on the social media platform X.

According to Meloni, the initiative aims to put an end to what she describes as a paradoxical situation: the possibility for a person injured while committing a criminal offence to seek compensation.

“You attack me. I defend myself. And I have to compensate you? That is not right,” Meloni wrote.

She said the bill establishes a clear principle under which a person who suffers injuries while committing a crime will not be able to seek compensation, a ban that also extends to their family members.

“Anyone who breaks the law cannot expect to be compensated by those who defended themselves. The state is on the side of decent people, not criminals,” the Italian prime minister said.

The post was published alongside a photograph of Meloni and the message: “Enough with the paradoxes! Anyone who commits a crime cannot seek compensation for damage suffered while committing a crime.”
