It is learned that the driver of the car was 26-year-old David J. Zapata-Vera, who was identified by traffic cameras. A witness described him as pressing the gas pedal and speeding through the pedestrian crossing as the traffic light was about to turn red.
The 26-year-old from Newark turned himself in to police on Tuesday, three days after the fatal accident, and is being held in custody without bail. He is charged with second-degree reckless vehicular homicide, second-degree leaving the scene of a traffic accident resulting in death, and third-degree endangering an injured victim.
