Lefter Maliqi: Rama reduced the number of municipalities to survive politically; DP should announce candidates as soon as possible

The recent approval of the Territorial Reform and the protests against the government were at the center of a strong response by former MP Lefter Maliqi, who accused the ruling majority of behind-the-scenes maneuvers.

According to him, the administrative changes providing for the merger of 15 municipalities, which were approved by the majority, serve Prime Minister Rama’s interest in ensuring his political survival. Maliqi claimed that these interventions seriously undermine the services received by citizens in the districts.

In the former MP’s assessment, Rama took this step for his own political calculations, believing that even in the event of his resignation, a map with 46 municipalities would enable him to survive politically and secure 68–69 MPs in the future. Maliqi described the abolition of the communes as a lethal blow, while he considered the current changes even more serious because they take services away from citizens. He recalled that he had headed the largest commune in Berat and said that the investments he had carried out are what remain there today.

Referring to the daily protests, Maliqi said that overthrowing what he calls the “narco-state” is the citizens’ main and legitimate goal. Nevertheless, he claimed that people from state structures and the Socialist Party had infiltrated the protesters with the aim of causing division.

The former MP said that an infiltrated group was also chanting slogans against Berisha. Mentioning numerous DP members and his participation in protests more than 30 times, he insisted that there were infiltrators among those present, including people from the Socialist Party and SHIK civilians. According to Maliqi, the protesters have a single demand: the overthrow of the “narco-state” and this government.

At the end of his statement, Maliqi called on the opposition to accelerate its electoral organization and go into the field with united candidates, urging DP to announce its candidates as soon as possible.
