Trump objects to being denied the Nobel Peace Prize: The award should have gone to the United States

U.S. President Donald Trump once again expressed his displeasure at not receiving the Nobel Peace Prize, just as he did a year ago. He said he had “never heard of” Navi Pillay, the South African judge who was announced as the award’s winner yesterday.

During a speech in Syracuse, Trump said the honor should have been awarded to the United States, represented by him as president.

“This represents a permanent stain on Norway and on the people who made a shameful and dishonest decision,” he said. According to Trump, the Nobel Peace Prize has been compromised more than ever by a group of radical ideologues, whom he described as “anti-democratic” and “in reality enemies of civilization.”

The 80-year-old Republican insisted that he deserved the recognition, claiming that he had contributed to ending eight wars. The statement comes after he launched a war against Iran at the end of February and earlier ordered the deployment of U.S. special forces to capture former Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro in January.

Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado, who won the Nobel Peace Prize last year, had also expressed support for Trump’s claim. She handed her gold medal to the U.S. president, declaring that he “deserved it”—an act that visibly pleased Trump.
