West Nile virus claims another patient’s life, bringing death toll to ten

A 70-year-old man from Skopje has died from West Nile virus, becoming the tenth victim in Macedonia.

The patient died over the weekend at the Clinic for Infectious Diseases, where medical staff had tried to keep him alive for more than a month. The clinic’s director, Fadil Cana, announced the news at a press conference today.

A total of 70 cases of infection with the virus have been reported in the country so far.

Of the ten patients who have died, nine were from Skopje and one from Kumanovo. Most were elderly and suffered from several underlying conditions.
