Japanese authorities have stepped up safety measures due to heavy rainfall and the risk of flooding accompanying Typhoon Dujuan, while around 1.9 million residents in six prefectures have been ordered to evacuate.

According to Japan’s Ministry of Internal Affairs, the order affects 1,908,645 people in Ibaraki, Chiba, Tokyo, Kanagawa, Shizuoka and Saitama. However, authorities have clarified that the evacuation is not mandatory.
At the same time, around 300,000 other people have been encouraged to leave areas considered at risk.
In Tokyo, emergency services have urged residents not to remain in basements, as intense rainfall could cause sudden flooding. According to authorities, water could suddenly surge into underground spaces and leave people trapped.
Residents have also been warned to exercise caution near manhole covers, which could be displaced by water flows during flooding.
