Shortly before sunset this evening, the Moon will move in front of the Sun, temporarily darkening the sky across large parts of the continent. For the first time in more than 100 years, a total solar eclipse will be visible across wide areas of Spain.
In Germany and other European countries, the phenomenon will be only partially visible. Forecasts indicate that weather conditions in Spain will generally be suitable for viewing the eclipse.
Experts are urging people to look at the Sun only through special certified eclipse glasses. Viewing it with the naked eye can cause permanent damage to eyesight, even if the Moon has only partially covered it.
Spanish authorities are also on high alert because of the risk of wildfires. Hundreds of thousands of people are expected to gather in open spaces and at elevated locations to watch the phenomenon, while dry weather and high temperatures increase the risk that even a minor act of carelessness could start a fire.
Spain has already faced major wildfires this year, which have burned significant areas of the country.
