For six days, emergency teams have been battling a massive fire in the Guadalajara region, located about 100 kilometers north of the capital Madrid. This is now considered the most serious incident of the year in the country.

Over 600 personnel, including firefighters and military troops, as well as 29 aircraft such as planes and helicopters, have been deployed on the front line of the firefighting operation. So far, the fire has scorched around 30,000 hectares of land, including forests and pastures. Around 1,200 people have been forcibly evacuated from their homes, while 34 villages have been emptied as a precautionary measure for residents’ safety.

A dense layer of smoke continues to blanket the mountainous area near Tamajón, where the main firefighting command post has been established. Planes and helicopters carry out continuous flights to drop water on the most critical hotspots, while ground crews fight to halt the advance of the flames.

According to officials, controlling the fire is extremely difficult due to the rugged terrain, neglected forests, dry vegetation, and strong winds. The situation is becoming even more alarming because of the third heatwave that has gripped the country, with forecasts predicting temperatures in many areas will exceed the 40-degree Celsius mark.
