The victim, Mackayla Paige, known to the public by her stage name Kash, was struck by bullets shortly after 1:30 a.m. on Sunday. Law enforcement announced that a female resident of Richmond has been detained in connection with the case, but her name has not yet been made public.
According to what the American television station KTVU reported, shortly before the tragedy the 29-year-old had posted videos on her “Instastory” showing her joyfully enjoying Saturday night.
Officers who responded to the 200 block of 14th Street in Oakland found Paige wounded by the gunshots. She was rushed to the hospital, but doctors were unable to save her life.
So far, investigators have not provided answers regarding the motive of the attack or the specific circumstances that led to the crime.
Kash’s name became known thanks to her participation in several reality programs, such as “Real West Coast Baddies”, “RoomH8z”, and “Young & Reckless”.
The 29-year-old dreamed of a brilliant career in the entertainment field, planned to open her own business, and was devoted to her passion for makeup. In addition, she had carried out collaborations with several modeling companies.
The news of her death shocked all her loved ones, who gathered to set up a memorial in her memory. Her cousin, Nicky Clayton, told KTVU that the sudden loss was something she was still struggling to accept.
She revealed that shortly before, Kash had been with her family and that no one had any idea about the misfortune that was about to happen.
“She was enjoying quiet moments with her family. She should be okay. I don’t know what happened, but I know she should still be here,” her cousin said.
According to Clayton, her friend had big ambitions and was determined with all her being to triumph in the world of show business.
The 29-year-old’s friends also approached the memorial to recall shared moments and the special role she had played in each of their lives.
Among them was a girl known as Poodahh – who has the phrase “Spoil Me With Kash” tattooed on her hand – according to whom her friend constantly encouraged the people around her to believe in themselves and to work to achieve their goals.
“She understands when I’m not trying hard enough and lets me know that I need to achieve what I know I can do. Thanks to her, I try to improve every day,” she revealed.
She was also remembered for her extraordinary liveliness and energy, describing the time spent in Kash’s company as a continuous adventure.
“My God, how much fun we had together! She would take us everywhere with her,” she added.
Deeply affected by the loss, her friend stated that she still cannot bring herself to refer to her as something that belongs to the past, as accepting that she is no longer among the living comes with great difficulty.
Meanwhile, returning to her friend’s dream of fame, she declared:
“I’m sorry we all lost her, because she is a star.”
After the shooting, social media was filled with images of the heavy police presence in front of the Cave Lounge bar, located near the intersection of 14th and Harrison streets in Oakland.
However, investigators have not yet confirmed whether the crime was committed inside or outside the premises of the establishment.
The identity of the detained woman remains undisclosed, while the motives of the crime are expected to be clarified by the ongoing investigation.
