The Durrës coastline is attracting more and more local holidaymakers, foreign tourists and fellow citizens every day. But despite being promoted on the international stage as a tourist destination, conditions in some parts of the beach remain worrying.
At Shkëmbi i Kavajës, where hundreds of holidaymakers gather every day, the scene is one of a sea polluted by sewage discharge, turning the area into a health risk and damaging the image of the coastline.

“The beach is very dirty. This canal should be removed; it has been like this for years. The sea is heavily polluted, it is very dangerous for health. The state does not function here. Yes, there is filth, but citizens’ taxes are collected and those aghas over there pocket them,” one holidaymaker said.
According to others as well, the problem of the canal that discharges sewage into the sea has continued for years, and during the summer the situation becomes even worse, as the beach fills with thousands of people every day.
“This canal is the problem. There are also irresponsible people who throw rubbish. This sea infects you, it causes rashes, especially in children. Sewage has been flowing here for years,” another holidaymaker said, describing the serious situation.
Residents and holidaymakers are calling for immediate intervention by the responsible institutions to clean the canal, stop the discharge of sewage into the sea, and take concrete measures so that this busy part of the Durrës coastline is clean and safe during the tourist season.
