Sad News: Professor and Linguistics Scholar Albert Riska Dies

Prof. Assoc. Dr. Albert Riska, a renowned scholar of Albanian linguistics and a lecturer at the University of Elbasan for more than three decades, has died at the age of 62.

Riska died on August 13, 2026. He conducted extensive work in historical linguistics, etymology and onomastics, as well as in studies of the Aromanian language and Aromanian-Albanian relations.

A graduate in Albanian Language and Literature from Aleksandër Xhuvani University, he built his entire academic career there. In 2004, he earned a doctorate in sciences, while in 2013 he received the title of Associate Professor. For six years, from 2016 to 2022, he served as dean of the Faculty of Humanities.

His major works include “The Aromanians – Notes on Language and Culture,” “Albanian and Christianity,” and “Traces of Indo-European Ablaut in the Albanian Language.”

In addition to his academic research, Riska was involved in scholarly publications, school textbooks, translations and editing.

Aleksandër Xhuvani University of Elbasan has expressed its condolences to the late professor’s family, relatives, colleagues and students.
