Ivan Fedorov, head of the Zaporizhzhia regional military administration, confirmed the casualty figures in the early hours of the morning.
“Five people were killed and 20 others injured. Unfortunately, the number of victims of the enemy attack in Zaporizhzhia is rising,” Fedorov wrote on Telegram.
Ukrainian authorities warned that the toll could rise further as emergency teams continued searching and working in the affected areas.
The attack caused damage across the city and prompted emergency services to respond to the aftermath of the bombardment.
Russian ballistic missiles also struck Kyiv, where residents reported powerful explosions overnight.
Capital authorities said the city had been targeted in a ballistic missile attack, while air-raid alerts were activated in Kyiv and other parts of Ukraine.
Residents were urged to remain in shelters because of the risk of further attacks.
The strikes on Zaporizhzhia and Kyiv are part of Russia’s ongoing aerial and missile campaign against Ukrainian cities.
Since the war began, overnight attacks have caused casualties and significant damage in residential areas and to civilian infrastructure, while Ukrainian authorities continue to assess the consequences.
