The Goethe-Institut’s cultural centers in Russia will be closed after Germany accused Moscow of being behind an attempted drone attack at Leipzig Airport.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov announced that the measure would affect the German centers operating in Moscow, St. Petersburg and Yekaterinburg.
The move follows Germany’s decision to close a Russian cultural center in Berlin and a Russian consulate in Bonn.
According to Lavrov, the German side knowingly made the decision, which will bring Germany’s cultural presence in Russia to an end. “They deliberately took this step,” he said, according to the Russian state news agency TASS.
The Goethe-Institut, a German organization focused on promoting culture and language, began operating in Moscow in 1992, immediately after the dissolution of the Soviet Union.
The move to close the centers marks another escalation in the long-strained relations between Moscow and Berlin.
