Some 63% of poll participants said they opposed the decision, while only 14% approved of it.
The results also show that Americans broadly oppose raising tariffs on products imported from Canada. Only 20% of respondents support higher tariffs, compared with 57% who oppose them.
The online poll surveyed 1,023 adults in the United States. The data were released at a time when relations between the United States and Canada have been marked by renewed tensions, mainly over trade issues.
Trump announced the decision regarding Lake Ontario last week. The name “Lake America” will be used in US federal documents and communications, while Canada and international institutions continue to recognize the lake by its traditional name.
The poll has a margin of error of about four percentage points.
