A Russian reconnaissance aircraft was intercepted by Polish fighter jets over the Baltic Sea, as authorities in Warsaw confirmed that Poland’s airspace was not violated.

According to Polish Defense Minister Wladyslaw Kosyniak-Kamysz, the incident occurred before noon, about 30 kilometers north of Łeba. He stated that the aircraft in question was a Russian Ilyushin Il-20.
“Russia once again tested our defense systems and air defense systems,” the minister declared in a post on X, emphasizing that the flight did not enter Polish airspace over the Baltic Sea.
This latest case adds to a series of similar incidents. In recent months, three other cases involving Russian reconnaissance aircraft in the airspace over the Baltic Sea have been reported.
An “in-flight interception” means that the fighter jet pilots approach to visually identify the crew of the foreign aircraft and then signal it to leave the area.
Such events have heightened concern in Poland and the Baltic states that Moscow may intensify provocative actions against NATO countries, including through the use of reconnaissance aircraft.
