Nigel Farage has secured a parliamentary seat once again after winning the Clacton by-election with 62.8% of the vote. He leads the anti-immigration Reform UK party and is known as one of the leading advocates of Brexit.

Meanwhile, his main rival, comedian Count Binface, recorded a surprising result, winning 26.7% of the vote.
Farage himself triggered the by-election after stepping down as an MP last month. His aim was to secure a new mandate and strengthen his position in the face of allegations over unregistered donations.
The main British parties chose not to field candidates, describing the process as a publicity stunt by Farage. As a result, his main challenger was Count Binface, the satirical character created by comedian Jonathan Harvey.
Although Binface’s candidacy was satirical, he managed to secure more than a quarter of the vote. His platform included unusual proposals such as imposing a price cap on ice cream cones, “nationalising” singer Adele and conscripting into the armed forces people who talk loudly on the phone while travelling on public transport.
In an unusual episode, Farage was absent during the vote count in Clacton. He said police had alerted him to a campaign aimed at inciting unrest during the announcement of the result.
Addressing supporters, Farage said: “I’ll be damned if I’m going to stand on a stage after winning a huge victory and be humiliated and abused by thugs.”
This electoral success comes at a time when Reform UK has fallen in the polls and the party’s funding has raised questions about its leader.
Farage is under investigation by Parliament over a £5 million gift received from a billionaire cryptocurrency investor. He has admitted receiving the sum without declaring it but claims that no rules were broken because he considers the money a personal gift.
Parliamentary rules in Britain state that MPs must report, within one month of taking office, donations received during the year preceding the election.
Following Farage’s resignation, the investigation was temporarily suspended, but it is now expected to resume upon his return to Parliament. The Times reports that he is also suspected of receiving another undeclared donation from George Cottrell, a cryptocurrency trader who was convicted of fraud in the United States in 2017.
If parliamentary authorities find that Farage failed to comply with donation reporting rules, he could be suspended from Parliament. Such a decision could trigger another election for his seat, this time with the main British parties expected to re-enter the race.
The Clacton result therefore returns Farage to Parliament, but it does not put an end to the debate and controversy surrounding his funding and that of Reform UK.
