Ohrid, Struga, Debar and Kichevo are now under the surveillance of the “Safe City” system. Months after the initiative was made public, the new cameras have begun capturing every traffic violation, with fines ranging from 15 to 500 euros, depending on the severity of the offense. Alsat reports.

The system will detect various violations: speeding, running red lights, illegal parking, as well as driving vehicles with expired registration.
Also interesting are the figures from the Novo Sello segment of the Ohrid-Kichevo highway, which is still under construction. There, the cameras alone recorded around ten violations per day, most of them for driving above the speed limit.
On the other hand, citizens are calling for this camera network to be extended to other locations as well.
“In my opinion, punishment will bring real order, otherwise things will be difficult. This is clearly visible even today, on the first day of operation – drivers are moving slowly. The intersections must be covered with cameras without fail, because there’s no point in having low speed limits in one section while in another the limit goes up to 80. More cameras would be beneficial both for pedestrians and for drivers,” said a local resident.
“We are dealing with many road accidents, some of them with fatal victims and others with serious bodily injuries. It is precisely for this reason that the analyses focused on taking measures in these sections, through the installation of a network of fixed cameras aimed at curbing this high frequency of accidents,” emphasized the spokesperson of the Ohrid Internal Affairs Sector (SPB), Stefan Dimoski.
