New Israeli Plans for Settlements in Gaza and the West Bank Draw International Reaction

The Israeli government has unveiled initiatives to establish new settlement outposts in northern Gaza, as well as to expand Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank.

Defence Minister Israel Katz said he intends to establish three “Nahal” outposts in Gaza. Meanwhile, Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich announced the allocation of around 1.3 billion shekels for expanding settlements in the West Bank.

These decisions have been strongly opposed by international organisations and Palestinian groups, which describe settlements in the occupied territories as illegal under international law. The UN human rights office has accused Israel of failing to prevent settler violence against Palestinians.

At the same time, the Israeli military says it controls around 65% of the Gaza Strip. Israeli military officials view this as a strategic achievement, while critics have raised concerns about the high number of civilian casualties and the humanitarian impact of the war.

The announced plans come amid rising political tensions within Israel, as the government faces domestic and international pressure over its handling of the conflict with the Palestinians.
