According to information published by Greek media, the incident occurred at around 11:30 p.m., while the transport vehicle was outside the hospital, near the psychiatric ward. The prisoner and two escorting officers were inside the vehicle.
At that moment, two cars resembling police vehicles appeared near the vehicle. The individuals inside approached the transport vehicle and, at gunpoint, subdued the two escorts.
The perpetrators then helped the prisoner escape. According to reports, they also took the service weapon of one of the prison officers. The group then fled in the two vehicles and disappeared without a trace.
The escapee is a 41-year-old Albanian national who, according to Greek media, was arrested last year by Organized Crime units in connection with an attempted murder case in Thessaloniki.
The incident had taken place at a food kiosk. He is also suspected of involvement in cases related to weapons and drug trafficking.
Following the escape, Greek authorities raised the alarm and launched a large-scale search for the 41-year-old Albanian, as well as the armed individuals who organized and carried out the escape operation.
