J.D. Vance on allegations against Guilfoyle: Selling access to the White House must have consequences

Allegations against Kimberly Guilfoyle, the former U.S. ambassador to Greece, have prompted a response from U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance. Reports of misconduct have led to calls for her removal. Vance described selling access to White House officials as “disgusting” and “despicable.”

In an excerpt from an interview with “CBS Evening News” set to air on Saturday, he said anyone seeking to make money by offering access to the U.S. administration must face consequences.

“First of all, if somebody is selling access to the White House, that is disgusting and despicable, and they should face consequences,” Vance said.

His remarks follow reports of a claim by Eric Deters, a former donor to Donald Trump, that Guilfoyle had asked him to transfer $100,000 to her to pay off a credit card. According to Deters, the request was made in the days before the Senate confirmed her as ambassador, and she had promised him access and support within the Trump administration in return.

Vance clarified that he did not want to rely solely on published news reports to reach a conclusion. “I want to form an opinion on these matters based on facts and not on some random media report I’ve read,” he said.

Asked whether the U.S. administration would comply with subpoenas related to the Guilfoyle case, the vice president said it would and stressed the government’s obligation to obey the law. “Of course I would. Listen, we follow the law,” he replied.

Guilfoyle was sworn in as U.S. ambassador to Greece in September 2025. She subsequently became the focus of reports about alleged requests for money in exchange for access to administration officials, the acceptance of luxury gifts and the inclusion of a lobbyist in official meetings.

Guilfoyle’s lawyers have denied the allegations. They said the amount cited by Deters represented overdue payments for consulting services and speeches. The U.S. State Department, meanwhile, is investigating the allegations of misconduct.
