The incident occurred on the morning of October 15, Italian media reported. According to the newspaper Il Tirreno, the woman went to the emergency department accompanied by her partner and told doctors that she had not known she was pregnant.
“I didn’t know I was pregnant,” she reportedly said upon arrival, addressing the doctors and nurses.
Medical staff immediately tried to provide assistance to the baby, but it had died and could not be saved.
In her statement to police, the woman said she had been at home with her partner when she began experiencing abdominal pain.
Her partner was asleep at the time. She went to the bathroom, initially thinking she was suffering from a digestive problem. According to her account, she had not realized she was pregnant and was not expecting to give birth.
Preliminary data indicate that the baby was small and may have been born in the 30th or 32nd week of pregnancy.
The Livorno Prosecutor’s Office announced that an autopsy would be carried out on the baby. Meanwhile, investigators are verifying the circumstances in order to reconstruct what happened.
Forensic examinations are expected to determine the cause of death and shed light on the circumstances of the birth. The investigation is ongoing, and the authorities have not yet issued an official conclusion regarding the cause of death.
