Investigation into the suspected murder of Ann Widdecombe transferred to anti-terror units

British Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood announced on Monday that the investigation into the suspected murder of former MP Ann Widdecombe is now being led by counter-terrorism forces.

Initially, authorities had stated that there was no indication that her death was a terrorist act or politically motivated, but now the case has been taken over by anti-terror units, CNN reports.

The body of the former MP was found on Thursday at her home in Haytor, Devon, in southwest England. According to police, she had died a day before being discovered.

Assistant Chief Constable Matt Longman said that Widdecombe had suffered “severe injuries” and that investigations are ongoing to fully clarify the circumstances.

On Saturday, a 28-year-old man was arrested in South Yorkshire on suspicion of murder. Devon and Cornwall Police said the detainee is a British national and is in custody.

The arrest was carried out with the assistance of counter-terrorism units in the northeast of England and South Yorkshire Police, acting on behalf of Devon and Cornwall authorities.
