Commissioner Marta Kos stated that environmental protection, including in the case of the specific project, is among the criteria that must be met for membership in the European Union.
She announced that, before the protests began, an agreement had been reached with Albania to repeal the law on strategic investments and the 2014 amendments within this year. Kos called on the authorities to fulfil this commitment as soon as possible.

According to her, protests and the way states respond to them are part of democratic processes. The commissioner also stressed that membership is an ongoing process and that Albania must align its legislation in accordance with the agreement reached.
