Oleh Kiper, governor of the Odesa region, confirmed the incident and said the ship was carrying grain at the time of the attack.
Data from the Ukrainian Sea Ports Authority showed that the “Mera Queen” was registered under the flag of Guinea-Bissau.
The strike came as Russia has intensified its attacks on Ukrainian ports in the Black Sea, targeting the country’s trade routes and exports. Ukrainian authorities say such attacks have been carried out almost daily in recent months, raising concerns about the safety of shipping and grain exports from the country.
