Etna reactivates in Sicily, airspace at Catania airport partially restricted

Mount Etna in Sicily resumed activity today, once again causing difficulties for Catania airport due to volcanic ash spread through the atmosphere and the impact it has had on airspace.

According to the Italian authorities, the phenomenon began in the early hours of the morning and then intensified during the day, while an ash cloud formed that reached about 1.5 kilometers above the crater.

Under these conditions, a decision was made to temporarily close part of the airspace south of the volcano, specifically in sector B2.

Authorities have asked travelers to check the status of their flights with airlines before heading to the airport, while further information is expected depending on how the situation develops.

Etna, which rises to an altitude of about 3,300 meters, is considered one of the most active volcanoes in the world, and its frequent eruptions often affect the region’s air traffic.
