The Etneo Observatory of the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) issued a new VONA (Volcano Observatory Notice for Aviation), through which the color code for aviation was raised to red. The ash dispersion is being continuously monitored by the institute’s network of visual and thermal cameras.

According to initial data, the volcanic activity has not generated a tall eruptive column. Despite this, the ash released into the atmosphere is being carried by winds toward the south.

This development has focused attention on potential consequences for air travel. Further assessments are expected regarding the impact the ash emission could have on the airspace of Catania-Fontanarossa Airport.

INGV specialists continue to closely monitor the situation, which remains dynamic. Changes in Etna’s activity or in the direction of ash dispersal could affect air traffic in the area.
