An appeal hearing has begun under tight security at the Court of Appeal of General Jurisdiction for Portuguese national Rubens Saraiva, who was sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of businessman Ardian Nikulaj.

The killing took place on April 19, 2023, at an establishment owned by Nikulaj in Shëngjin.
The Court of First Instance in Lezhë found Saraiva guilty of the murder and sentenced him to life imprisonment.
Members of the victim’s family are also attending the appeal hearing, while heightened security measures have been put in place at the courthouse because of the significance of the case.
