German MEP Anna Strolenberg has responded to the student protests in Albania, holding Prime Minister Edi Rama responsible for the situation. She has called on the European Union and its member states to condemn the violence seen during the demonstrations.

In a social media post, Strolenberg said she had seen disturbing footage of police intervening against demonstrators, as well as videos showing people setting buildings on fire. In her view, the escalation cannot be attributed solely to the police or to violent protesters.
“My conclusion, however, is clear: Edi Rama is the cause of all this,” the German MEP said.
She criticized the prime minister for how, in her view, he has treated peaceful protesters from the Flamingos movement. Strolenberg also accused Rama of showing no willingness to fight corruption or bring about fundamental change in the country.
The MEP stressed that she supports Albania’s membership in the European Union, but said the path to accession must include guarantees of citizens’ fundamental rights.
“I want Albania to be part of the European Union. We are all Europeans. And that is precisely why I feel a responsibility to act,” she said.
Strolenberg said she would ask the European Union and various countries to condemn the violence during the protests. She also linked the situation to the accession process and the European Commission’s enlargement report, which, according to her statement, is expected to be published on November 4.
“If Albania wants to become part of the European Union, it must have a government that respects the fundamental rights of its citizens,” the MEP stressed, calling for pressure to be brought to bear on the Albanian authorities.
Her comments come at a time when student protests and anti-government demonstrations have been marked by clashes between police and demonstrators. Reforms, the fight against corruption and political change remain central demands.
