Confirmed cases have risen significantly over the past week. So far, the death toll has reached six, and all those who have died were over the age of 65.

Of the 65 people infected, 54 have developed central nervous system complications, including encephalitis, meningitis and acute paralysis. Twenty patients are currently still in hospital, while eight of them are receiving treatment in intensive care units.

Cases have been concentrated mainly in Attica, which includes Athens, as well as in Thessaly and Central Macedonia. According to health authorities, circulation of the virus is particularly high in Attica. Meanwhile, several other areas have been classified as high-risk, despite having reported no human infections so far.

The infection is transmitted mainly through the bites of mosquitoes carrying the virus. These insects become infected by birds, while the virus does not spread from person to person through ordinary contact. Around 80 percent of those infected have no symptoms, while most of the remainder develop a mild, flu-like form of the illness. Fewer than one percent of those affected develop severe neurological complications.

Older people, those suffering from chronic diseases and individuals with weakened immune systems face the greatest risk.

Authorities have said that the transmission season is not yet over and that new cases may also emerge in other regions of the country.
