According to experts’ warnings, the continent is entering a new phase of megafires, in which flames spread with extraordinary force and are becoming increasingly difficult to bring under control.

In southwestern France, record areas have been scorched by wildfires. The fires have also caused unusual atmospheric phenomena, including the formation of clouds from the heat of the flames, while experts rank them among the most intense ever recorded in the country.
Spain is also battling powerful wildfires near Madrid and in other regions. Thousands of residents have been forced to flee their homes, while high temperatures, strong winds and drought are fueling the spread of the flames.
Because of the situation, the European Union has activated its civil protection mechanism, sending aircraft, helicopters and firefighting teams to support France and Spain.
Wildfires have also affected other Mediterranean countries, including Greece and Turkey. Authorities warn that the continuing heatwave could further increase the level of risk.

Scientists say rising global temperatures are prolonging periods of drought and causing more frequent and powerful wildfires, making their management an increasingly serious challenge for Europe.
