Strong winds and temperatures exceeding 40 degrees Celsius have worsened the situation in Italy, France and Spain. The flames have forced thousands of people to leave their homes and tourist destinations.
Sicily remains the worst-affected area in Italy. For several days, approximately 6,000 firefighters, forest rangers and Civil Protection personnel have been battling dozens of blazes across the island. More than 160 active fires have also been reported in neighboring Calabria. Local authorities believe many of the fires were started deliberately and accuse arsonists of using cruel methods to spread the flames.
More than 10,000 tourists have left campsites and tourist facilities near Bordeaux in southwestern France. The evacuation was carried out after a massive wildfire burned around 2,000 hectares of pine forest in the coastal area of Le Porge. Two days earlier, two firefighters died while battling another blaze near Bordeaux airport. Unions have warned that firefighters are facing a lack of resources and working under exhausting conditions.
Scientists warn that climate change driven by the burning of fossil fuels is increasing the frequency and intensity of heatwaves and wildfires, while also making them more difficult to bring under control.
