In a post on the social media platform X, US Central Command (CENTCOM) announced that a new offensive began at 7:00 p.m. local time. It said the operation was aimed at “degrading Iranian military capabilities.”
US President Donald Trump said the strikes were carried out “in honor of the fallen soldiers,” referring to the American troops killed during the Iranian attack in Jordan.
Washington is preparing to deploy additional fighter jets to the Middle East, CNN reported. A US official cited by the network said the reinforcements would give President Trump more options as his administration considers its next steps in the confrontation with Iran.
Against this backdrop, mediators have put forward a proposal for a 10-day ceasefire, Reuters reported, citing a senior Iranian source. The initiative aims to pave the way for talks and assess the possibility of restoring an interim agreement between Iran and the United States.
The risk of the conflict spreading across the region has increased further after the Houthi rebels announced the imposition of a naval blockade against Saudi Arabia.
The escalating tensions have also affected international energy markets. Natural gas has reached 60 euros per megawatt-hour, its highest level since March.
