US President Donald Trump has intensified his critical tone toward NATO, with direct attacks especially aimed at Spain, as he expressed dissatisfaction with the alliance and called for trade relations with Madrid to be cut off.
In a statement, Trump targeted Spain for what he described as a lack of commitment to NATO, calling the country “a terrible partner.”

“Spain is a terrible partner in NATO. They do not take part, they do not pay. I do not want to have any connection with Spain,” Trump said.
He asked US officials to consider suspending trade and visits with Spain, claiming that the country would then come back seeking closer ties with the United States.
Trump also added that he remains dissatisfied with NATO over the positions of allies on issues such as Greenland and Iran, stressing that, in his view, some countries have not provided enough assistance.
