Ombudsman Endrit Shabani conducted an inspection today at the Home for the Elderly in Tirana, with the aim of closely verifying the conditions in which pensioners live and the problems affecting this service across the country.
At the end of the visit, Shabani put forward a direct proposal, calling for assets confiscated by SPAK to be immediately put into use for care centers for the elderly.

According to him, the need for such a solution is urgent. In Albania, only 6 public residential centers for housing the elderly are in operation, with a capacity of 330 places, while more than 60 thousand elderly people live alone.
Currently, demand for these services is higher than the number of available places.
On the other hand, the state owns 63 buildings confiscated from crime, including hotels, villas and apartments.
“This year alone, SPAK has confiscated 2 million euros in assets from crime and corruption. Public institutions can put these properties and assets to use in the service of the elderly,” Shabani said.
During the inspection, the Ombudsman also identified a lack of medical staff and nurses, as well as a lack of treatment facilities for elderly people with serious health problems.
