The serious incident took place on Saturday evening on “18 Shtatori” Boulevard, near the justice institutions and Gjirokastër Police, when the Mercedes exploded while in motion.

Beqir Devolli, who was driving the car, died while being transported to the Trauma Hospital in Tirana as a result of his injuries. Erigers Mela, who was in the vehicle, was injured, but is reported to be out of danger.

As Top Channel journalist Dorjana Bezat reports, Devolli had not reported any open conflicts. He was convicted in 2012 of illegally transporting migrants.

His family lives in a village in Gjirokastër County, while Devolli himself spent most of his time in Tirana.

The motive for the attack, the mechanism used to detonate the explosive and the people responsible for placing it have yet to be officially determined. Investigations are continuing to establish the full circumstances of the explosion and identify those responsible.
