According to him, the project’s cost increase of around €100 million should draw the attention of SPAK. Salianji is calling for an investigation to be conducted before public funds are spent and tracing them becomes difficult or impossible.
He is calling for a full verification of the contract, the procedures followed, the decision-making process, the beneficiaries and every payment made from the state budget.
“Milot-Balldren is a government scandal, with an increase of nearly €100 million that must be investigated immediately by SPAK,” Salianji said.
The former MP stressed that when hundreds of millions of euros are involved, an investigation should begin in advance, not after the funds have been misused. According to him, if there are suspicions of abuse involving Albanian taxpayers’ money, SPAK’s intervention must be immediate.
Salianji stressed that every aspect of the case should be examined, from the contract and procedures to the decision-makers and beneficiaries, who, according to him, are under investigation by SPAK, as well as every cent paid from the budget.
“There must not be an investigation only after the money has disappeared,” he said, also raising the question of whether accountability can have any value after the assets have been distributed and whether justice is effective when everything has become a fait accompli.
Ervin Salianji is calling for the Milot-Balldren project to be fully investigated and for every person responsible, if the facts prove abuses, to face justice.
He added that public funds cannot be treated as assets to be divided up and that anyone who has abused them must be held accountable before the law.
