Austrian economist and political activist Gynter Felinger-Jan has presented a project for reorganizing Macedonia, suggesting that the country operate as a federation modeled on Austria. Under his plan, the state would be divided into eight regions, each with its own parliament, government and governor, Lideri.mk reports.

The units would include Skopje, Polog, the Northeast, the West, Vardar, the East, Southwest/Ohrid and Pelagonia/Bitola, according to the plan he published on the X platform.
The regions would administer areas such as education, culture, infrastructure, regional development and the local economy. The federal government, meanwhile, would be responsible for defense, foreign policy, macroeconomic policies and setting national standards.
The plan, reported by the Ekspres portal, is authentic. However, a verification conducted by Plusinfo clarifies that the proposal does not represent an initiative of the Austrian government, the European Union or NATO, but is Felinger-Jan’s personal political initiative.
The Austrian economist aims for Macedonia to join the EU, the Schengen area and the OECD by 2029, while adopting the euro as its official currency.
Felinger is not an unknown figure in Macedonia. In February 2021, during Zoran Zaev’s government, he was appointed a member of the Investment Approval Committee at the country’s Innovation and Technological Development Fund.
The committee did not have a merely ceremonial role, as it was responsible for the final selection of projects seeking state funding.
Felinger remained part of the committee even after Zaev’s term as prime minister ended. He held the position until 2024, when he was dismissed following the end of his term, in a decision published in the Official Gazette./Lideri
