The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), one of the agencies involved in the investigation, said the aircraft was a Mooney M20F, a four-seat propeller plane.
The tragedy occurred in the eastern part of the state, about 64 kilometers east of Orlando, at approximately 10:00 a.m. local time, according to police.
Because of the severity of the crash, the pilot’s body has not yet been identified, the fire department added.
As a safety measure, Florida Power and Light cut electricity to neighboring areas, the Titusville Police Department said.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is also contributing to the investigation into the cause of the accident.
