A woman was killed and three people were injured after a Russian drone struck the Academy of Sciences building in central Kyiv on Monday, September 28. The news was announced by the mayor of the Ukrainian capital, Vitali Klitschko.
The historic building was heavily damaged in the attack, while emergency crews and firefighters arrived at the scene. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky published footage of the area showing the aftermath of the strike and the extensive damage to the building.

“The Russian attack on the Academy of Sciences building. Rescue operations are currently underway. They are putting out the fire and searching for people who may have been inside the building,” Zelensky wrote.
The footage shows that a large section of the side wall had collapsed. Flames engulfed the second and third floors, while rubble and large amounts of debris were scattered throughout the surrounding area.
Initial reports from Kyiv authorities said an unoccupied building had been hit in the Shevchenkivskyi district, where the historic Academy of Sciences is also located.
Other Russian attacks were reported in several Ukrainian cities.
In Dnipro, in the southeast of the country, a drone struck a business center, killing three people and injuring at least 12 others, according to the regional governor. In Kharkiv, a Russian glide bomb struck a residential building. The mayor, Ihor Terekhov, said that 29 people were injured, including 10 minors.
The attacks also affected the wider Kyiv region. According to President Zelensky, two people were killed, one of them an Azerbaijani citizen.
Zelensky said the drones also damaged residential buildings, telecommunications infrastructure and several fuel stations in the capital.
Russia’s Ministry of Defense confirmed that it had carried out attacks, but claimed that the targets in Kyiv were data centers providing the Ukrainian military with mobile phone services and internet access.
Moscow also announced that a logistics center and a vessel were hit in the Odesa region, claiming that they were being used to transport supplies for the Ukrainian armed forces.
