Before meeting Macron, Trump will receive Zoran Mamdani, the mayor of New York City. Mamdani is part of the left wing of the Democratic Party and has voiced opposition to several policies of the American president.
The French president traveled to New York from Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon, a French territory in the North Atlantic. There, on Sunday, he met with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney.
Macron and Carney declared their support for the national sovereignty of France and Canada, while also calling for closer ties between the two countries. The meeting took place at a time when Trump has repeatedly spoken about Canada, including threats to annex it.
