According to the reports, one is a Russian-born man who holds a Latvian passport, while the other is a Belarusian citizen with a Russian passport. Both are known to the German authorities.

The investigation is focused on the incident of August 4, 2026, when a drone equipped with explosives was found near Ukrainian cargo aircraft at Leipzig/Halle Airport. The device was disabled, and the incident caused neither casualties nor material damage.

German authorities have said that, based on the findings of the police investigation, the methods used and intelligence information, responsibility for the failed attack has been attributed to Russia, which they consider part of a hybrid operation. Moscow has rejected the accusations, calling them unfounded.
