A 45-year-old Albanian captain has been arrested by Corfu port authorities after the passenger ferry he was operating was found to be carrying more people than its approved capacity allowed.
The vessel, flying the flag of Saint Kitts and Nevis, was sailing from an Albanian port to Corfu. Upon arrival at its destination, officers from the Central Port Authority counted the passengers and found that the maximum limit specified in the vessel’s navigation certificate had been exceeded.

Following this finding, the 45-year-old was arrested. He faces charges of violating the Code of Public Maritime Law and legislation governing the handling of passenger overcrowding, as well as procedures for their registration, inspection and inventory.
The Central Port Authority of Corfu is conducting a preliminary investigation to fully clarify the incident. At the same time, procedures have been launched to impose the administrative sanctions provided for by law.
