A major natural disaster has struck the border region between Nepal and Tibet, where a massive surge of water, mud and ice swept through entire communities, killing more than 160 people and leaving over 1,000 missing.
Hundreds of tourists and pilgrims from countries around the world are among those reported missing.

The disaster occurred on Wednesday, when the collapse of masses of material in a high-altitude area triggered a sudden and exceptionally powerful flood.
The powerful torrent of water, mud and ice rushed down through the valleys at great speed, sweeping away homes, multi-story buildings, bridges, roads, vehicles and energy infrastructure.
Footage released from the moment of the disaster shows a massive surge of water and mud advancing toward populated areas as residents desperately try to flee to safety. Some were unable to escape and were swept away by the powerful current.
