The European Union has approved a new 6.1 billion euro fund to boost Ukraine’s defense capabilities, as Russia has intensified attacks on Ukrainian territory.

The financial package includes air and missile defense systems, as well as missiles, ammunition, and radars. The aim is for Ukraine to have more capabilities to protect its population and territory from Russian strikes.
This funding is part of the 90 billion euro loan that the EU approved earlier this year. The distribution of funds will take place during 2026 and 2027.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen described the new support as evidence of Europe’s “unwavering and concrete” stance in support of Kyiv. “As Russia intensifies its attacks, we are taking steps to help Ukraine defend its people and its skies. Europe stands with Ukraine and we will provide it with what it needs, when it needs it,” she said.
The approval of this package came a day after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s statement, in which he warned that Ukraine lacks 27 billion dollars for defense funding this year.
Zelenskyy said that costs higher than initial forecasts have caused a significant financial deficit, as the country continues its military confrontation with Russia.
With the new package, the EU aims in particular to improve Ukraine’s airspace defense and to provide weapons and ammunition amid the escalation of Russian attacks.
