Zelensky Rejects Elections During the War: They Would Cause Deep Division in Ukraine

Volodymyr Zelensky has opposed holding elections in Ukraine as long as the country remains at war with Russia, warning that such a process could cause deep social and political divisions.

“Elections now would be a tsunami for the country that would divide Ukraine,” the Ukrainian president said, as discussions about restarting the electoral process receive increasing attention.

Zelensky’s position comes after a proposal by former Ukrainian Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov, who has called for elections to be held even under wartime conditions. Fedorov, who left office in July, said Ukraine must restore the democratic process and address problems related to governance and corruption.

The Ukrainian president views this possibility as a threat to national unity. According to him, the war and the declaration of a state of emergency do not create the necessary circumstances for organizing a regular electoral process.

Elections in Ukraine remain suspended during the war. The Ukrainian Parliament has decided to extend the state of emergency and mobilization until October 31, 2026.
